Town of Canandaigua 225th Anniversary Kick-off Celebration

On Monday, April 18, 2016, the Town Board kicked off the 225th Anniversary Celebration with Israel Chapin (aka Ray Henry, Town Historian) leading the Pledge of Allegiance.  Israel then entertained the board and the audience with a re-enactment of the first Town Board meeting. Israel, who was the first Town Supervisor held the original Town Board meeting on the first Tuesday of April 1791.  At that time, the first item of legislation voted on was “That swine, two months old and upward, shall have good and sufficient yokes." (A yoke being a frame worn on the neck of an animal, as a cow, a pig, or a goose, to prevent passage through a fence) and second "That for every full grown wolf killed in town, a bounty of thirty shillings (estimated less than $2) shall be paid." (Gazetteer & Business Directory 1867-8: 40).

On behalf of the Town Board, I would like to thank Israel Chapin for making a special appearance at our meeting.  I would also like to thank our Special Events Committee, Dina Mangiamele, Chairwoman, Oksana Fuller, Secretary, Lois Golbec, Ed Varno, Ray Henry and Dennis Brewer for planning and executing this wonderfully entertaining and educational event!

The Special Events Committee has planned additional celebrations for our 225th Anniversary.  These events include:

Ontario County Fair, July 28 – the Events Committee will host an interactive display with live presentations and free giveaways in the Mercantile Building;

Fall Square Dance – date & location pending;

Halloween at Onanda Park, October 29 – lakeside cabins will be decorated for this family friendly event and activities will include scavenger  hunts, face painting, photos, and trick or treating.
