The Town of Canandaigua’s Comprehensive Plan identifies goal # 1, “Establish a regulatory and economic framework that supports the protection and continued development of agriculture” as a priority. An Agriculture Project Team has been working since 2015 to develop the first Town of Canandaigua Agriculture Enhancement Plan.
Funded through a NYS Department of Agriculture and Markets grant, the citizen project team has been meeting once a month to develop the scope of work for the project, evaluate responses to an RFP from consulting firms, gather input from landowners and members of the agriculture industry, hold public information meetings, and work with the firm to develop the draft document.
“Striking a balance between agriculture and development has been a priority for the Town of Canandaigua,” said Supervisor Pam Helming. “This draft plan helps by identifying current trends, development pressure areas, quality soils, and strategies to encourage and facilitate the long term viability of farming operations in the Town of Canandaigua.”
The Draft Plan can be viewed here or hard copies are available at the Town Hall. The plan identifies 14,679 acres of active farmland in the Town of Canandaigua, with 75% of the Town being made up of high quality soils suitable for farming.
